Search engine traffic is the lifeblood of 90% or more of the websites on the internet.
While there is still a significant amount of traffic that moves between major portals like ebay, amazon, facebook and other social networks, for most sites these are not major referers of online traffic.
What is online traffic?
Why, it’s you and me moving around the internet by browsing and clicking links ( hyperlinks ) on web pages that take us from one site to another.
Prior to Google, getting more search engine traffic was actually quite easy. The process was as follows :
Figure out what your desired search term was ( which was difficult due to a lack of tools )
Write your html page and throw in some graphics to make it look interesting
Take your desired search term and put it in the title area minimum two times max four times
Ensure that your search term is in the H1 and found several times on the page.
If you couldn’t truly make proper grammatical sentences, at that time you could change the background color of the text to make it equal to the background color of the page ( hence hiding it from human eyes ). But please don’t do this now.
And that was basically it. Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista, Aol, Excite, Hotbot and others of the day were set up such that their search algorithms ran almost directly off of their database sort algorithms.
Search Engine Traffic – But that was then. Don’t do that Now.
So, would this work now?
Can you get backlinks quickly ?
Absolutely not. By putting your search term in the title two or more times, you would be running the strong chance of being banned for spamming.
Any attempt now to hide things on an html page would immediately be picked up by 95% of the search engine algorithms and getting banned would happen faster than you could spell it.
Further, the introduction of patented Google algorithms which were partially copied by competitors put an end to the sole use of onpage optimization techniques as the only way to rank in the search engine results.
Search Engine Traffic – The Vote
What came next, was that the founders of Google decided to allow a page’s ranking in the search engine results to be primarily determined by 3 things.
How many other sites had voted for the target site.
The keywords that the other sites had used to vote.
The PageRank or Value of the other site that had given the vote
This then became the foundation or basis for the off page algorithm that persists today on almost all search engines ( Yes, this despite the Google PageRank Patent, lol )
So, is this all it takes ? If you get the onpage optimization and the offpage optimization correct – is that basically it ?
Google has, it is rumored, 200 additional finetuning variables that they look at.
Votes for a page Via Backlinks
They have never and will likely never reveal what those are however groups of thousands of seo experts have tested millions of sites and reported results of those tests in user groups, forums and elsewhere.
Consequently we can say with quite some certainty that even without onpage seo, it is possible to use offpage seo alone to push nearly any site into the top results of the google search results.
The truth is of course that given equal circumstances a properly optimized page will rank far more easily than a page that doesn’t even have the keywords on it at all.
Search Engine Traffic – Why the focus on Google?
This is because in North America, Google’s dominance is close to 74% of all search engine traffic, while in Europe and elsewhere Google’s international dominance is still well above 60% in most countries with the biggest exception being China.
Backlinks – So, What Can a Girl do now ?
There are any number of ways that a site can attempt to get links ( backlinks ) to itself.
So you want more Search Engine Traffic ?
